route five: my life in green and blue

Overview

The route begins at the foot of Mt. Carmel, in the tranquil yet thriving community of Kiryat Tivon. As we travel northward and upward, we’ll stop off at the Druze villages of Daliyat El-Carmel and Isfiya, and we’ll end the day with a tour of Haifa – the largest city in the north. The area of focus is the most populous area of northern Israel, but one that is blessed with the majestic geographical features of Mt. Carmel. As we climb upward, we’ll linger a bit to take in the view of Haifa Bay and the northern coast. Haifa, the lively metropolis located relatively “far” from the northern border, was brought to its knees during the last war. We’ll tour some of its loveliest spots and meet with owners of small businesses along the way.

Detailed route

The tour begins on Rt. 722, with a view of the Jezreel Valley to the east and Mt. Carmel to the west.

Kiryat Tivon, one of Israeli’s loveliest communities, is our first stop. We’ll visit the bronze statue of Alexander Zeid on horseback. Arriving in 1926, this legendary Hashomer leader discovered the ancient catacombs at Beit She’arim, now the site of a national park. Before leaving the area, we’ll visit the art studio of Hadas Raz, creator of painted ceramic decorative tiles (#114).

A Taste Treat in “Carmel City”

The colors of the landscape shift from green to blue as we continue along Mt. Carmel toward to Haifa Bay and the Mediterranean Sea. We’ll pass through the suburbs of Haifa before reaching the city itself.

A Port City Built on a Mountain

Izebela Lam (#1), Beads and stone jewelry

Dorit Jordan Dotan (#79), Hand-printed ketubot

We’ll cap off the day with a meal to be arranged according to the group’s wishes. If kosher food is not a requirement, we can have a Lebanese-style meal ($8 per person) catered by Maha Issa (#112).
