about us

NES

Northern Exposure was initiated by Shatil in the wake of the 2006 Lebanon war as part of an effort to assist the most vulnerable economic enterprises – micro-businesses and people, particularly women working alone – to get back on their feet.

Northern Exposure is a partnership with five of Israel’s leading business development organizations:

Each organization is affiliated with between 10-50 businesses, for a total of 200 micro-enterprises. NES businesses represent Israel’s vast cultural and ethnic spectrum from traditional Druze food to Ethiopian Judaic embroidery.

Shatil assists NES businesses through the development of this website, a distinctive marketing and public awareness tool, and through the opening of new markets via recommended tours. Through Shatil, the organizations provide one-on-one business consulting to many of the NES businesses, assisting them in maximizing their businesses potential.

SHATIL (“seedling” in Hebrew) is the New Israel Fund’s Empowerment and Training Center for Social Change Organizations promotes democracy, tolerance and social justice in Israel. Through a community based strategy of organizational capacity building, Shatil provides technical training, hands-on consultation and coalition building guidance to over 1,400 nonprofit organizations each year. Furthermore, Shatil promotes social change through the development of leadership skills of individuals and groups that are often at the margin of Israeli society such as immigrants from the Former Soviet Union and Ethiopia, Arab Israelis and micro-business owners- to name a few.

Funding was passed to NES through the Jewish Agency for Israel, one of the UJC's partners. Other donors to the project are The Hadassah Foundation, the New Israel Fund, and the Cummings Foundation.
